I'm on the final page of the Modding: C&C Generals: Infantry Modeling and Animation tutorial, and I apologize but the man / woman who typed this tutorial has some problems describing things.

"First, import the animation you want to edit. For this tutorial I am going to use the _RNA.W3D running animation.
Note: The ranger has a _RNB.W3D animation file that is the animation for when the ranger begins to run. If you don't edit this file as well, then the running animation when he starts running may look odd."

Wait, am I getting rid of what I already have open or am I leaving it there and then importing the animation? Which one am I importing!? You say you're using the RNA.W3D running animation but you're also telling me it will look weird if I don't do the RNB.W3D animation!?

So I say f**k it and just open the RNB.W3D animation. I go down a little further and he tells me that what I have on my screen should look EXACTLY like his/hers. Seriously!? Which one do you have open!? I open both of them seperately and neither of them look like his!

The tutorial has done nothing but frustrate me so far, but I refuse to give up because I'm so close to the end.

I took a guess at what in the world I was supposed to do and got rid of the MUZZLEFX01, because in the screenshot he didn't seem to have that part at all, yet had everything else. I moved the bones to their respective positions, continued on my way through the last of the tut, loaded the game to see what I got, and I got literally nothing.
The unit was completely invisible.
I could select him, move him, destroy / kill things with him, but I could not see him.

Also of you have them in the right area what are their names
Those names must be copyed exact in the ini if it's not u will get inviso stuff

It's exactly where he told me to put them. It's in the tutorial.

"By default, all the .W3D files can be accessed from:
C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals\W3D.big
Open W3D.big with FinalBIG, and use it to extract the all the Ranger’s files to:
C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command & Conquer Generals Zero Hour\Art\W3D\"

For future reference, I followed that exact tutorial down to the letter, so if you're wondering where I put something, and that tutorial tells me where to put that exact same thing, then that's most likely where I put it.

Also, the tutorial doesn't tell me even once to rename the files. The name is always the same as the original file, or I have to overwrite the file, whichever.

@qqqqqqqqqp - I'm trying to do all the tutorials I can get my hands on because I'm wanting to get into Game Development / Design, and I seem to have unluckily started with this one, seeing as UTD refuses to do it, and you've done so but both attempts failed, I'm going to guess that I chose one of the hardest things to do?


Also, I understand this is a little off topic, but if either of you have the answer I would appreciate it. You don't HAVE to answer this, or even read it.

Along with this game, I'm also trying to go through tutorials on Dungeon Siege, which I also have to mod with Gmax (And a whole bucket load of other programs). However, I wanted to see if the game would actually work on this hunk of junk first. It runs perfectly fine as long as I have Party Shadows and Bilinear on. Everything else can be maxxed out (Sorry if you have no idea what I'm talking about or if you frankly don't care).
Generals / Zero Hour however, doesn't. I don't exactly have a lot of RAM, I have 1GB of RAM. (Two sticks!) The game runs as if it is at half speed. I can deal with that (As agonizing as it is).
The point is, however, that Dungeon Siege crashes, even when I turn my settings all the way down, and gives me the error "ialmrnt5.dll display driver has stopped working". However, when I play Zero Hour, it NEVER gives me this. I've updated my graphics card and it still does this. Any reason why?

The game running slow; there should be a adjustment for the framerate in the skirmish menu, try increasing that.
Also try asking Google.

Dungeon Siege crashing; my guess isn't that your drivers aren't good enough, it's that the game and the video card just don't like each other. Try randomly changing any graphics settings you can find, in the compatibility settings, places like that. You could also look at the game files and try to find some sort of settings file, and manually change settings in there. Should probably make a backup of the file if you do that though. Ask Google if those things don't work.

I appreciate your rather quick and useful reply.
I did ask Google before, if I remember right I found that the required amount of RAM GB's was 2, and I only have 1. It doesn't matter what I do to the game, all the custom options are off, texture, resolution, all those goodies are as low as possible, and the game speed is at max. I just learned to deal with the fact I can't have the game running full speed right now, but that's fine with me because it gives me slightly more time to think about the things I want to do during challenges. Although, online isn't an option because it slows down others too.

I'll give that a try. When I searched that error on google earlier all I could find was forums, and they all basically said the same thing: update your Graphics chip, if that doesn't fix the problem then your card is going faulty.
The only problem is that it only started doing this when I started playing Dungeon Siege. I've had several games on here before and that problem has never occured. I'm also semi-positive that Generals would take more out of my chip than Dungeon Siege, so why doesn't Generals give me the errors? It's not that I can't mod the game, it's that If I ever want to look at something in-game it's going to be impossible because I can't even progress past the literal beginning of the game where you're fighting the Krug with a skimpy pitchfork (A bow, in my case.)

Welcome. Another thing you could try would be to open Generals, then Task Manager, then go to Processes and right click Generals then Set Priority to High, but i don't know how much it will help. It will probably give you a warning about it, it should be ok though. Don't set it to Realtime though, that can cause issues. If that works, you'll have to do it every time you start Generals.



Again, it's probably that your card and the game don't like each other. Sometimes it can be fixed by changing random settings, like maybe playing with different compatibility settings and stuff like that. Generally, fixing this sort of thing just means changing random settings until something works

I refuse to make infantry not because it's hard, simply because it needs time, skills in skin and skills in making his body. I don't mean to be negative or stop you from trying, I just mean that I'm not acidbrain in making W3D modules and skinning them 😃

Don't get me wrong, I never took it that way.
In this tut I'm not making a new full set of bones or a whole new model or anything, I'm just taking a model that's premade in the game and modifying it, and it seems to be the biggest pain in the !@#$ in the world right now because the author didn't explain the details that mattered the most.

I agree with you i hope someone can explain this tutorial clear and easily.Or maybe create a video tutorial in youtube.

Have you finished going through the tutorial that comes with Gmax? If you haven't it might help make it a bit clearer on what he's trying to explain. It's still a tad bit hard to understand, but not as hard if you've done the Gmax tut and understand the different tools in gmax.
