You know how you can select to be a General during Skirmish setup? Well, what I'd like to do is take those General-specific Structures, Units, and Powers and "merge" them with their respective standard faction.


Question: In total (includes game's current default) how many factions can ZH have?

I have an idea for a Mod, though will soon enough need help with new/custom models etc etc...

12, IIRC. It varies somewhat depending on what you want the faction to do, as you could simply allow the player to choose a mini-faction after starting the game.

thanks. this would be my first time modding anyhow.

What I plan to do is somehow change the Generals factions (like usa laser general) to a new faction, but would like to save his/her specific unnits, structures, & powers to standard USA faction.

yes, and their structures/units. such as USA Laser general has laser turret, I'd like to put it in with normal USA faction. (same for the others, china to china, gla to gla)Smile

I miss playing as Nod/Soviet GDI/Allies etc when playing Zero Hour. Sure, that AllStars mod is nice but I need some difference. like factions not bunched together/more factions.

There's no easy way to merge factions together. You'll just have to do a lot of modding.

I still wish to learn modding for ZH. for starting, I'd like to give usa generals' stuff to normal usa faction. which files/folders would I need?

It's actually 15 factions if you include boss general and the other two unused general slots.

Though 16 is a more round number if I get my data with games and stuff. So I think you could have 16 factions...

Xenoforce has 3 new generals(Gundam, Zaku and Macross), and not one of them is a replacement for Boss General.

Now for 'merging' the generals; you could simple re-assign building/unit prerequisites to the general of your liking as well as the required sciences for skills.

You will need the ini files of:
AmericaAir
AmericaInfantry
AmericaVehicle
AirforceGeneral
SuperWeaponGeneral
LaserGeneral

As for 'better' versions of units, you could replace the default version completely by re-assigning it to the General-specific building.

Like for example:
-EMP Missile Turrets completely replaced the Normal Missile Turrets.
-Auroras are completely replaced Alpha Auroras.
-Raptors completely replaced with King Raptors.

Though for some of Laser General's weaponry, you might want to keep a separate unit for it, so you can have Laser Crusaders and Normal Crusaders working together.

Reduced back to 3 main factions(and a couple of extras).
Each faction can choose a(or all of them) tech-tree via General's Powers.

Red Skulls: Armor Division, Mecha Armada, Drone Swarm
Earth's Saviors: Air Raid, Homeworld Security, Stealth

It depends how you count it. 12 is the maximum number of campaign slots. You could even count Civilian and Observer.

Okay, so new faction has say China Troop Crawler & USA Humvee. I'd like for them to use Civilian Vehicle Models & Textures, same for the Structures using Civilian structure models & textures... So Humvee as a Car... Troop Crawler, maybe as a Limo?

First starting with Mutants faction, then will work on the others... deal with new models etc later, meaning also armor, health, damage...

how to test new factions?

Here's what I'd like, for example:
Mutants
-America Powerplant -> ChemicalBunker
- China Barracks -> ChemicalFacility
-GLA Arms Dealer -> BaikonurGroundControlCenter
-GLA Black Market -> NuclearBunker
-America Command Center-> AirfieldHanger01

Barracks
-Angry Mob (+let attack air units)
-Pathfinder (as 'normal' Infantry unit)

In general, You can replace ModuleTag_01 to fully replace the model of one unit with another. However, with no firing bones on those vehicles, the projectiles will likely come out of the floor.

What about those humvs from GLA's mission 2? (generals not ZH) They do fire at you if you come close (the 'UN' humvee). And even if, you can always use turret as fire bone, should look realistically enough for bullets.

well, just wondering is there a way to add another slot to the drop down menu when selecting faction for skirmish? without overwriting generals like USA Laser General etc, if it's possible ok if not well can figure something else out...
