For some reason I cannot get Generals to work with Vista! I have tried everything. I am dying over here. I made sure everything was running as Administrator, i have the newest drivers, tried running it with and without the patches. The game installs fine, and when i double click it, i get the initial splash screen, which goes away...then the 2nd bigger splash screen shows up. But right as it's about to load the opening video, it just sits there with a "Serious Error" message that pops under the 2nd splash screen. The only way i can see it says "Serious Error" is because of Vista's thumbnail view from the taskbar. No Crash Info text file is generated. Both Generals and ZH encounter this. Can anyone please give me a hint here???

Hey there, i have the same problem, just thought i would add my system specs to see if that helps.
Specs: Windows Vista Ultimate 32bit Core 2 Duo E6600 @ 3.15 Ghz 2 Gb DDR2 PC6400 Nvidia GeForce 8800GTX (Driver Version: 158.24) SoundBlaster X-Fi XtremeMusic (Driver Version 2.15.0002)
The reading i have done is pointing to the Graphics card, but seeing as we have different models/drivers i doubt it is that. I had genrals working on XP and also Vista with this same machine. The only thing that has changed is drivers so i am going to try to roll back the sound card and video card to a later version and see if that helps anything.
Good Luck! I will post if i come up with a fix. -Scott

Check Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data and see if there is a ReleaseCrashInfo.txt. If there is, post the contents here.
You should probably also try the compatability mode, set it to XP and try again.

Tested under compatibility mode for Xpsp2 / Win2k / and Win98 with no luck =/ Thanks for the suggestion!

In that case, I think you're right, it might be linked to your graphics card. You should try to uninstall your graphics card drivers and then let Windows Update find the right ones for you; they have been tested. If that doesn't work, get the latest from Nvidia (Again). Here are my specs: Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz 2.5Gb of 667Mhz ram ATI Radeon X800XT Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit Motherboard integrated sound I have no problems running the game at all. Thanks for your suggestions.

You're welcome. I have Googled around some more and I think your graphics card is incompatable. Some people have reported that just from swapping GPUs to something other than a GeForce 8800 GTS/GTX, and not changing anything else in their system, Generals starts. Some other people have said that disabling one of their CPU cores has helped as well. You might want to give that a shot, just restart your computer and press whatever button it says to start "Setup" or "BIOS" (Usually F8-F12). You might want to also try adding "-quickstart" to the end of the target line in ZH's shortcut (Right-click the shortcut, properties, shortcut tab, target). Anyways, sorry I could not find a solution for you. I hope you find one, and if you do, please post it here; there are alot of other people experiencing this issue. Good luck.

Confirmed (Just to be clear i will repost the steps to fix it all credit goes to TRIGRHAPPY for the fix) Windows Vista: 1. Go to 'Control Panel' Select 'Classic View' and then Open 'Folder Options' 2. Click the 'View' tab and uncheck 'Hide extensions for known file types' if not already unchecked then Click 'OK' 3. Navigate to "C:\Users\yourusername\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data\" you should see ReleaseCrashInfo.txt and ReleaseCrashInfoPrev.txt. 4. Right click and select 'New > Text Document' 5. Open the new text document and paste the following: Code:
AntiAliasing = 4
DrawScrollAnchor =
GameSpyIPAddress = 0.0.0.0
Gamma = 50
IPAddress = 0.0.0.0
IdealStaticGameLOD = High
LanguageFilter = false
MoveScrollAnchor =
MusicVolume = 55
Resolution = 1600 1200
Retaliation = yes
SFX3DVolume = 79
SFXVolume = 71
ScrollFactor = 50
SendDelay = no
StaticGameLOD = High
UseAlternateMouse = no
UseDoubleClickAttackMove = no
VoiceVolume = 70
Note: you may need to change "Resolution = 1600 1200" to whatever game resolution you prefer.6. Rename 'New Text Document.txt' to options.ini 7. Bow to TRIGRHAPPY for finding this fix

I posted it on the other thread because it's sticky, so more people will see it long after this thread is on page 342343. My directions weren't too user friendly so my thanks for making it more clear ;) I do think a slightly less demanding options.ini is necessary since quite a few systems cannot run it at that. Most people will just copy and paste, changing nothing, and at 1600x1200 they won't even be able to enter the options menu to change resolution. For that reason i'll repost mine, since everyone can do 800 x 600 and lowest settings pretty much. Oh yea, you forgot the highly optional step of sending me $500! ;) Quote:AntiAliasing = DrawScrollAnchor = GameSpyIPAddress = 0.0.0.0 Gamma = 50 IPAddress = 0.0.0.0 IdealStaticGameLOD = High LanguageFilter = false MoveScrollAnchor = MusicVolume = 55 Resolution = 800 600 Retaliation = yes SFX3DVolume = 79 SFXVolume = 71 ScrollFactor = 50 SendDelay = no StaticGameLOD = Low UseAlternateMouse = no UseDoubleClickAttackMove = no VoiceVolume = 70 BTW, nice system +1. Just built this one.....pretty similar. Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit E6400 @ 3.2ghz (and never gets above 55c ) 2GB DDR2 800 (dual channel ftw) Geforce 8800GTS 640mb I can't help but wonder what' timm's is running. Maybe we can narrow the problem down to a specific version of Vista. Edited by user Saturday, June 23, 2007 12:25:37 AM(UTC)
