TechTV's Review

TechTv's Extended Play has done a review of CNC Generals. You can see the review as well as an interview at EAP. Watch today at 9:30 p.m. and tomorrow at 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Eastern. They give it a high 4/5 stars. Here's a snippet of the review:
"Command & Conquer: Generals" is a welcome overhaul of the "Command & Conquer" series. The various tweaks, vastly improved graphics, and emphasis on streamlined gameplay make it one of the most enjoyable entries in the franchise. Overall this is definitely one of the best PC titles available, and given its excellent presentation options it's the real-time strategy game that high-end system owners have been waiting for. The end result goes beyond the standard rehash that passes for a sequel nowadays, and it stands on its own as an addictive and enjoyable warfare simulation. While not entirely groundbreaking, "Command & Conquer: Generals" is one excellent game.

Submit a Map Feature Online

Submit a Map page, read the instructions, fill out the form, and submit away!

On another note, I've re-organized our top navigation menu (again).  The Features section has been replacted with an Interact Section.  Also, some of the Features pages have been moved to the new Other Info category.   The War Stories section was removed do to lack of updates and lack of interest.

Well, get building maps to submit already!  And remember, we're only looking for quality maps, so be sure to take the time to test your maps thoroughly.

Message from EA Pacific

EA Pacific wanted us to pass this message along to all you fans awaiting the 1.3 Patch.

Dear C&C Generals players,

Here's a short update from the team.  Thanks very much for all your energy, patience and support.

PATCH 1.3 STATUS

We're continuing to work hard on Patch 1.3. Rather than wait and continue to explore mysterious issues (the serious error continues to be hard to nail down but we're getting closer) we are going to release a subset of the intended fixes described previously. It's either that or we wait an undetermined amount of time to get everything in. We'd rather get most improvements out and then fix the remaining issues in the near future.

As of today, 1.3 consists of the following fixes:

- QuickMatch stability and matching

- General connection fixups behind routers (multiple players behind the same router, refreshing the player IP after a failed connection)  This isn't 100% but it should be better for most
- Refresh button added to Custom Lobby
- Game List/Player List no longer pops to the top occasionally
- Player List no longer jumps, etc. making it difficult to click on a name
- Communicator requests addition of buddy to both players. Also, incoming messages get a sound effect
- Spaces in front of games in Game List no longer allowed
- Game Lists/Player Lists alphabetize in upper and lower case
-
Ping tolerance icon adjustment to make more useful
- More accuracy in number of players per game in Game List

Obviously we would prefer to get everything sorted but we'd rather not wait to post a significant patch if we have a lot of stuff fixed up.

We are very aware of the various other issues hanging around and these are not forgotten.

Currently we're in the testing phase and expect to release the patch tomorrow if all goes well. Not sure of the exact time yet as we want to make sure we test a lot first.

SERIOUS ERROR

With regard to the serious error we've had some very helpful players that are local to our studio come in and let us fiddle with their systems.  The systems the players brought in should have been fine based on the system specs submitted.  In all 3 cases we found that there were problems with the actual systems...primarily overheating.  C&C Generals is a taxing game for any system and if you have any slight instability the game will likely manifest it for you.  Tomorrow we will post some links to diagnostic tools that should help players figure out if they have any issues.  We in no way deny that there may be a serious error lurking in the game.  We are saying that we can't get it to happen on any of our machines, we get numerous posts/emails noting the issue but the machines in question are under spec and the machines where we thought we might find a lead have turned out to be machine related.  If anyone has a true issue then we would love to get our mitts on your machine for a couple hours.  Anyone live in Southern California?  Send email to seriouserror@ea.com and mark it "SOCAL" to set up a visit and we'll give you a tour, some t-shirts, some games, etc. in exchange for you're bringing your system by.  We'll continue to work on it.

LOSTCONNECTION EMAIL

Please send info to lostconnection@ea.com if you continue to have trouble connecting online.  This will help us gather data to improve the system.  We will not be replying to these but will use them to help determine real community issues.

ROUTER WORKAROUNDS

As far as routers are concerned we've posted some info that should help many players work around the issues.  Thanks to Hautkarl for giving us some insights and ideas that really provoked us to try some new things.  Good work!  The community needs more guys like you!  We have provided workarounds here that should help some players.

FAKE PATCH 1.2

Before Feb 15 a patch that we did not post was put up on Fileplanet.  If you got that patch then you will need to reinstall.  You can check to see if you have the right 1.2 version by checking C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals\Patch to make sure it is dated 2/15.  If it is then you are fine.  If not then you must reinstall.  The game WILL NOT work correctly if you do not have the right patch.  Simply reinstall and log into Generals Online or go to ftp.ea.com and visit the EA Pacific section to get the correct 1.2.

FORUMS

We've been pretty active with the forums so please make sure to visit generals.ea.com and read up!

Fire Island Map

This map deserves a newspost of its own!  RVMECH over at CNCDEN has released his latest map!  It's called Fire Island.  Here's its description:

This is a 2 player map taking place in the late evening on an island somewhere in the South Pacific. There's a live volcano and a river of lava flowing on this map...so tread lightly! Plenty of room to expand your base, and a medium amount of cash is available. The map was designed for the skirmish player in mind. Normally a battle against one brutal becomes boring after a fashion. This map is a bit different. Each faction has an enhanced AI in the brutal mode. Each faction has it's own separate script packages incorporated into the standard AI package. There are a few surprises so be wary. I doubt if you will be able to rush any of the brutal AI's and come out unscathed. Also take note that the USA Brutal does not use the "Hold The Line" strategy that is the standard but rather the "Bombardment " strat. Did I mention the birds?!

Sounds like a very hot map indeed!  The live volcano and lava is very cool -- a must have!  You can download the map from CNCDEN here!

Map Creators

Hey everyone!

I want to take a moment to thank everyone who has responded with great interest to my request for people to be map makers.  I'm currently in the process of going through all the emails I received.  I'll be replying to everyone tonight.  If anyone else would like to become a Generals World staff member and be an official map maker for our fansite, please email me.

For those of you who are interested in simply submitting maps to our website, I'd like to like to inform you that we are only looking for quality maps.  What does this mean?  It means to take time and effort when building maps.  Especially make sure you learn how to blend terrain, water, etc properly.  How do you do this?  Well, I'd suggest taking a look at these two tutorials:  CNCDEN: RVMECH's World Builder Tutorial  and the Official EA World Builder Tutorial.  If you submit well-made maps, they're sure to be accepted, and if you prove yourself to be an exceptional map maker, it is likely that you'll be asked to become a part of our staff.

Get them maps ready to submit!  We'll be accepting fan submited maps by the end of the week.

Patch 1.3 Coming

For those of you who are still having problems with Generals Online, EA is working on a version 1.3 patch.  They're hoping to get it out this week.  Here's the main part of Harvard's post on the Official Forums:

1. Fix the remaining connectivity issues with firewalls/routers, etc. We got most of them last time but we at least need to provide a reliable workaround for players and at best will provide a patch to fix all the problems. (PS...I'm referring to players entering games and immediately getting the disconnect screen...sometimes games don't load for all players, etc)

2. Fix QuickMatch as its not reliable at present.

3. Fix the serious error problem.

4. Make clicking on player names in the player list easier.

5. Add a refresh button in the Custom Match lobby.

6. Fix the "lost connection to Generals Online" issue.

7. Make the "add a buddy" process much clearer.

8. Fix the innaccurate number of players listed per game in the Custom Match lobby game list.

9. Fix the dupped games in the Custom Match lobby game list.

10. Misc other smaller issues.

If you want to read the full message, visit this thread here.  Looks like all of these Generals online connectivity issues will finally be fixed soon.

ActionTrip Generals Review

ActionTrip.com is the latest to review C&C Generals.  They rated it an 84/100.  Here is a clip from their review article:

Those of you who are looking to buy this game for its single-player facet will definitely object to the relatively short and uninspired single-player campaign. There are three sub-campaigns in total, each of which you can finish in a day's time. The single-player mode lacks Westwood's trademark FMV cut-scenes, and any characters or a sensible plot that you can relate to. Over the years, Westwood has become famous for their adaptation of Frank Herbert's "Dune," and they've been known for their ability to incorporate a great storyline into an RTS, but I guess there wasn't enough time or money to do this for Generals. In light of the recent troubling news about the company's demise, it's not hard to see why this game didn't get as much attention or funding, as it probably should have. Certain sacrifices had to be made, and in order to make the gameplay, multiplayer facet, and the 3D graphics so complete, something simply had to give. It turns out that it was the single-player portion that had to be cut down in order to deliver the best core gameplay possible.

To read the rest of the article, be sure to head here.

Generals Reviews

With the release of Generals, reviews have been pouring in as expected.  All of them review Generals as being a great game.  Here is the list of reviews, and a snip from each of them:

UGO (Website | Full Review)
Would-be Generals begin their journey by choosing an allegiance: The USA offers strong tanks, well-trained crews and the best air force in the biz. On the flipside, the GLA stick to the ground, digging tunnel networks and sacrificing strength for speed. Finally, the Chinese fall in the middle, with some tough armored units, sufficient air power and horde tactics that can drown their enemy in sheer numbers. Depending on the playing style, all three factions are interesting and fun, but deviating from their intended purposes will get you in trouble. Blitzing with the USA is slow and cost-prohibitive, while bunkering in as the GLA will get them killed in no time.

GameSpot(Website | Full Review)  Rating: 8.9/10
The gameplay itself is what you'd expect from a Command & Conquer game--it's fast, responsive, and filled with lots of great explosions. There's no dillydallying about, just a quick-and-dirty setup process where you slap down a few key structures and then move on to cranking out a good, mixed group of forces. Numerous, unique upgrades are also available to each faction, competing for your resources. Resource gathering, while slightly different for each faction, is fully automated like in Red Alert 2. The US helicopters, Chinese supply trucks, and GLA workers will all make a beeline for the closest batch of "supply," which is basically a big stockpile of valuables just sitting there and waiting to be collected. As in all Command & Conquer games, a viable strategy in Generals is to attack the enemy's all-important gatherers, though the buildings in the game can't withstand much damage, either. You can't build walls, base defenses are pretty flimsy, and a lot of the buildings are quite large and vulnerable--so the game definitely favors an aggressive style of play. Overly defensive play will merely land you front-row seats to the fiery destruction of your own base.

GamersDepot (Website | Full Review)  Rating: 5.5/6
The back-story to Generals is that there are three Armies competing for world dominance and each have their own methodology of going about it – sort of like Starcraft’s three races but not set in some far futuristic setting. The USA, China and a terrorist army called GLA (Global Liberation Army) are jockeying for ultimate rulership with GLA having it the hardest as they have to fight both China and the USA throughout the campaign.

IGN (Website | Full Review)  Rating: 9.3/10
Westwood and EA decided to move away from the silly cutscenes of old and instead stick with a more mature style. All scenes use the in game engine to good effect although they use a Matrix style camera for too many of the explosions. There are no main characters to fart around with this time around, instead focusing on the war and the fact that while there are heroes, it's no one man or woman that conquers the enemy. It's a good move for the series and while some people might miss past attempts at character driven fiction, Generals manages to stay true to the series with its gameplay and faction styles.

Hour Long Generals Video

Can you not wait the 6 days until Generals is released? Can you not get enuff CNC Generals? Well, if you're a GameSpot Complete member you can watch the hour long video in a streaming version or in MPEG downloadable format. (Mpeg me, anyone?)

If you're not a GameSpot subscriber, you can watch a 5 minute streaming preview here. This excellent video shows executive producer Mark Skaggs playing through many Generals missions. Be sure to check it out, especially if you've got a broadband internet connection.

Update: Shinano over at CNC Universe has compiled the transcript of the video! It's huge, and I'd like to thank Shinano for the hard work. When I've got some time I'll be sure to read it here.

GeForce FX

Hey everyone,
A little/lot of news tonight about the geforce FX, I know many of you plan on getting it for Generals. TechTV has done a review and benchmarking test on the card with it's beta drivers. It looks promising and better than the radion 9700 pro. Well, click here for the article, here is a snippit:

We'll be revisiting the GeForce FX 5800 when we get our hands on a retail card and mature (and publicly available) drivers. The GeForce FX 5800 won a majority of our benchmark tests, but not by an overwhelming margin.

High-end graphics cards such as the Radeon 9700 Pro and GeForce FX 5800 Ultra are able to deliver the eye candy at high resolutions. Competition is the consumer's best friend, and we're glad to see that Nvidia will continue to keep ATI firmly on its toes.

More EALA Info & New Movie

Reuters has new article EALA, you can visit it here. Here's a snippet:
The company, which plans to make Los Angeles a major hub of game development, said on Thursday it would hire at least 300 new staff over the next two years as it gears up for new games, including those based on high-profile movie franchises.

Part of the appeal of Los Angeles, EA officials said, is that they can tap a talent pool of thousands of workers with the skills they need in areas such as animation and story development to produce the game business's version of epic Hollywood blockbusters.

There is a new movie that was orginaly on gamespot. It's the Sizzle video for China. It's in quicktime, high quality, and available for download on our Videos Download page.

US Space Shuttle
