I recently downloaded a mod called generals pack 3.0. It was a neat mod, had some pretty nice units and textures for current units. I don't currently have it installed but I do have it installed in a folder on my desktop so I can see the contents. I noticed the creater has a whole folder of new W3D files to define his new units. This has my interest sparked becuase I would really like to be able to create and implant my own ideas into CnC like this fellow did. I however do not know what program to use to open or create these files. Where can I get a program that allows me to create models for CnC as well as textures and sounds. Also, is modeling really that dificult? Especially if you are working of current models already in the game. One weeks ago I thought INI editing was tough but now I have figured out (with some help from Pi) how to do about anything I want in those INI files. I would credit my inspiration to the person who created the generalspack 3.0 mod but I can't find a name attached in the install file, but anyhow, he did an amzing job. I played one game as modern warefare general back when I had it installed and only found one glitch the whole game, and the harrier jets were sweet. EDIT - I downloaded GMax as well as the CoolFifes 3D importer and RenX Custom User Interface. If I try to start up GMax I get an error saying interactive 3D renderer failed. I can open the RenX program but I don't know if that is what I need, I'm still stuck on the fact that I can't start the other program up.

I believe you should've already seen this: http://www.cncgeneralsworld.com/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=7261 And RenX is all you need, GMax is only there so the RenX plugin can be installed on it, otherwise you don't really need GMax.

Yea I did some searching and "Westwood 3D" turned up that forum topic... thats where I found those links. Once I'm into RenX can I import models that are already in the game so I can get a feel for how things work? I saw the import option but it was light grey and I could not click it. I thought I downloaded a tutorial but it was for GMax and so I must not need that either.

RenX needs a W3D importer to import models. You can find two in the mentioned modelling topic. Whichever you choose is up to you, or you can download both and use the one you're most comfortable with.

I downloaded and installed both of them, I then went restarted like it asked and went back into RenX and went to File > Import, but the file extenion option of W3D is still not listed, nor will it pull up any files I have with that extension it says file format not supported. Do I need to go about this differently? EDIT - I have RenX installed, and I unzipped both the w3dimporter and RenXCustomUI into their respective locations. Now I am unsure of what to do. Running RenX doesn't seem to let me import W3D models still.

Read the readmes included in the files, they'll tell you how to import them as both importers does not import though the File > Import window.

Thanks, I couldn't find the readme, even exported to an empty folder on the desktop still no readme, but I found some other instructions elsewhere that led me to it... I imported a model for the comanche, pretty neat. I also did the tank tutorial on kallasmods which was fairly informative, although I'm still not sure how to add textures so if you know how to do that or have another link that'd be cool, otherwise I'm sure I'll figure it out eventually. I'd really like to make a mamoth tank like there was in some of the other CnC's. I'd like to make one with regular cannons and one with laser cannons. I think it will be fairly simple, I've got about 8 years of AUTOcad under my belt so I hope I can handle this it seems very similar. Any advice on textures though would be great!! Haven't found a tutorial on them yet....

Killasmod pretty much explained one way of adding textures to your model, the same techniques can be used on all models and can apply to texture/skin file made by yourself.

So I'm working on learning RenX, but things are definately coming along... but I suddenly had this thought. Can I upload the models used in CnC3 for certain units and resave them as W3D files for use in ZH? It would remove some of the fun of making tanks myself, but that would def be a much easier way of obtaining a mammoth tank.

Yes you can, yes you can...

really.. now that opens up a whole new world of possibilities, although I must say. Your response came off rather strangly, as if you had a grin on your face as you said it. You haven't by chance done this have you? Or helped instruct someone else to? I'm going to see if I can figure it out. I have CnC 3 installed (just dont play it much) so I'll see what I can do but I'll prolly be posting back with "how in the H**L do I do this" threads here in a minute.

Nope, I haven't done it, but seeing that people have already placed Generals ZH models into C&C3, I would assume the reverse is also possible, considering also the fact that they're both running on the SAGE engine. However, as the two games operate on a slightly different versions of the SAGE, the models will have to be modified before being usable in the other game. And about that grin thing; it's just the atmosphere created by the sig and avatar...

I did some snooping in the CnC files, also with FinalBig but couldnt find anything that I could pull into RenX. The file system to CnC3 is somewhat foreign to me so I would probably need someone with some experience there to show me what it is I'm looking for, and what importer option in RenX allows me to bring it in. At that point I'd hope I could just follow the last section of the tutorial I watched to get it into ZH.

You won't be able to access all of the C&C 3 models because they are in compiled form. If you want to play around with some of them, then you must download a pack off of the C&C 3 website (I'm not sure exactly where it is) and play with the uncompiled models.

Thanks CommieDog, I'll check around for the website. Is there not a program (like finalbig) that can access the compiled form of these models?

The C&C3 Mod SDK should be able to. Official Download Page - Scroll down the right scroll bar and you should find it. CnC Source Download Page

Sorry, Krit, but the Mod SDK contains only a compiler, not an uncompiler.

Oh well... He still needs it for the modelling bits anyway...

yea... I am going to repost this topic in the CnC 3 discussion for game modifications and see if anyone who doesnt frequent the generals forums has tried this.
