Whats the easist way to control what programs automatically start up when you boot your computer running windows xp??......My game sometimes runs a bit sluggish even though I have high end processing power. I know there is a lot of crap going on that I don't need to run when I'm gaming.
thanks

botmas, although it may look this way, all of these programs are vital to the running of your system. the only things i would reccomend doing are:
1.cancel all security systems after disconnecting from the internet (unless you are playing online)
2.go into ctrl-alt-delete task manager, end all applications
3.after starting generals, ctrl-alt-delete>processes> generals.exe >right click and set priority above normal
4.get a fan on it, open a window, or some other method to cool it down

Red, you just gave him an alternative (and long) way of shutting down his computer, lol

Hey thanks for the info but pretty well everything I've heard supports that there is a ton of crap that doesn't need to be running when your gaming............Does anyone agree with this?.........and if so, besides any security program or messaging program, what else is there that I can shut down? I have a program that tells me whats running in the background, but the descriptions are not detailed enough for me to really know what they are....often times they are just acronims (I'm sure I didn't spell that right). I actually downloaded a procedure for windows 98 that was specifically designed to inhance gaming preformance. It involved accessing somthing called selective start-up and manually choosing to bypass certain processes when booting up. Unfortunely, I can't find it.
any ideas?
thnaks

Start > Run > msconfig
That'll help you with the start up programs. To know what program is what, Google is your best friend.
