This works for those with the original C&C Gens and ZH CDs. Most have been having the same problem as me with getting the multiplayer part to work without crashing with the tech difficulties box showing up. I checked the MS Vista Games Support Forum and found this as the solution and it does work for 32 bit version of mine and a 64 bit version person said it works also.
Download the Generals 1.08 patch and the ZH 1.04 patch from EA (http://www.ea.com/official/cc/generals/us/demos.jsp?state=6) and right click on each separate patch and choose 'Run as Administrator' to update which allows multiplayer mode to work again. The in game and patchgrabber will mess up the updates.
Also make sure you set both C&C to 'Run as Administrator' to ensure they work correctly. I have run them both with success without using compatibility mode.

Thanks for posting these tips. I myself have no problem running Generals or ZH on Vista here though. I have 2 PCs with Vista, 1 that installed using the normal Generals and ZH disks and 1 that installed using the TFD pack:
PC 1:
Intel Pentium D 3.2Ghz
2.5Gb of 667Mhz ram
ATI Radeon X850XT
Windows Vista Business 32-bit
(Normal Disks.)
PC 2:
Intel Core 2 Duo E6600 2.4Ghz
2.5Gb of 667Mhz ram
ATI Radeon X800XT
Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit
(The First Decade.)
Both play fine when networking and online. I'm suprised some people are having problems with the normal disks and patching.

Yeah, I'm with AA. I installed vista last night along with generals and zh and everything works fine. The only problem I have is that the Ion Cannon beam shows up pink for no reason.

My zero hour single player runs fine. But when I say play online it says could not connect. I installed the patches and set generals to administrator . Whats wrong?
Posted by: Luckie - Friday, March 23, 2007 4:39:21 PM
AA, its a driver issue, not a missing file issue. It shows up pink because the crappy vista nvidia drivers dont understand the words that be comin' out of ZH's mouth.
chromedomer, windows firewall might be blocking it. Open the control panel, then Windows Firewall. Ad a rule about unrestricting generals.exe.

Check Firewall settings. Make sure that generals.exe and game.dat both are allowed through.

For some reason I cannot get Generals to work with Vista! I have tried everything. I am dying over here. I made sure everything was running as Administrator, i have the newest drivers, tried running it with and without the patches. The game installs fine, and when i double click it, i get the initial splash screen, which goes away...then the 2nd bigger splash screen shows up. But right as it's about to load the opening video, it just sits there with a "Serious Error." Both Generals and ZH encounter this. Can anyone please give me a hint here???

Check "ReleaseCrashInfo.txt" in Documents/Command and Conquer Generals Data and Documents/Command and Conquer Generals Zero Hour Data and post the contents here.
Nice setup by the way.

See, that's just the thing. It does not creat a ReleaseCrashInfo.txt. What happens is that the 2nd splash screen comes up and the hourglass says vista is working on it...but then it just sits there, and another message comes up but pops under the splash screen. The only reason I can see what it says is due to Vista's thumbnail view that comes up when you highlight the window at the bottom. i just right click the error window that comes up and close it from the taskbar at the bottom. Then no ReleaseCrashInfo is generated. Any suggestions?
Thanks by the way about the setup!

I also have a problem trying to run this in Vista; I know this is an old topic but I need some help. At first I couldn't run the game at all since there was no options.in, so I followed the above instructions and got the game to run. Now the problem is that the game would freeze a few seconds into the game, and the error reported by Vista said game.dat is not responding (it was also a problem with that file for the options.ini error as well). What the hell is wrong? I got the lastest patch for ZH, and this is a clean install. I also set it to run as admin.

Vista/32 multiplayer/ online issues with C&C Zero Hour.
Where to start.
Zero Hour and Generals run perfect, except;
When I join a custom match/ quick match and try to join the mulitplayer game by clicking "accept", I never connect to anything. I can't play online at all. I then have to CTRL/ALT/Del out of the game and restart the game.
-I applied everything as "Mr_A1" recommended.
-I tried the file "Kane lives in death" recommended.
-Running both Generals and Zero Hour in compatability mode for XP SP2.
-Running everythng as Admin.
-Made exceptions in Firewall/ disabled fire wall.
-No spyware or viruses, turned off all anti virus and spyware security systems.
-Removed Windows Defender. (what a chore).!!
-Removed User Account Control. (What a chore)!.
Everything worked great on my old XP PC, when I bought this new machine and reinstalled with Vista 32 Home Premioum, I simply can't connect to any online matches but I can play single player, and it works fine.
My computer is upper/mid end gamer, two GTS 8800's, Core 2 Duo 2.4, 2 gig ram, etc, etc. My boy and I play ALL "Steam" games COD 4, DOD: S, Orange Box, and.. MOH: Aiborne, all run great and I can play all the other online games I have perfect but ........C&C Generals Zero Hour "Online".
Any more help would be great, I would really like to get this going, my boy and I liked this game.
Sincerely, Pern.
pern1971@yahoo.com
P.S. Vista has no advantage that I can find. Its full of issues, dificult to use (for gamming). If I had a copy of XP sitting on my desk....I would install it and put Vista back on the shelf and wait for the update/ fixes!

erm refering to TRIGRHAPPY's solution for the hang on the 2nd splash screen, the file that i make, is it a folder, a text document or something else. (sorry for this dumb question, i've tried many methods for my problem which is the game doesent load and it gets stuck on the 2nd splash screen before closing). thanks
Posted by: TRIGRHAPPY - Wednesday, December 26, 2007 10:40:33 PM
You're creating a text document (not "rich text"). When you "Save As" name it options.ini
Make sure you don't save it as options.ini.txt by accident or it won't work, it MUST be "options.ini"
Or just right-click "save as" on the link below, and save it to your Zero hour/generals folder in "My Documents". If it asks to overwrite, say yes. Then load it up and play. This fix works for Generals and Zero Hour. Good luck folks

You have a mod installed , or it has not been removed completely , delete the > ZH main dir > Data > INI folder
about , file extensions , .ini .... , you can simply do it in a txt file , save , then rename the file extension.

Hey TRIGRHAPPY, I've had this problem ever since I got my new pc(3months) and what you've advised has worked perfectly....spot on. Thanks a brazillion m8.
One more thing tho, I have the exact same problem with LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth II.....there aint any game info in my documents so I can't try the same trick as for C&C.
Have you ANY idea what I could do to sort that out?
If you do, then, well, I still can't send you $500 sorry. But imagine the satisfaction of helping a fellow gamer out with such an annoying problem.
Cheers ;)

here is a fix i found on another site not sure if it is for every one but it worked for me, i had already done the compatability and run as administrator changes.
go to -> start -> all prgrams -> acessories -> command prompt -> open it, Type Msconfig.exe, press enter -> in that go to tools tab, then find Disable user UAC and click it, their problem solved, you can turn it on with the option underneath it.
htis is not my idea i just found it and thought it was pretty simple so i tried it and it worked for me. who knows my puter couold melt tonight as a result. if any one can better explain the change i made i would love to know if any one else is looking for what might be a simple fix and is easy to undo here it is.

I know this topic is about Vista installation but i'm having the same error you mention in regular Generals under XP so i thought i'd bring it up. I played Generals for some days with no issues whatsoever. When i install ZH, Generals stops working, always returning the "Technical Difficulties..." box. I tried removing the game directories under My Documents or using that stripped down option.ini file but no luck. This is using the C&C Deluxe Edition. Did anyone happen to go through the same experience and found a fix?

[grin] Had the splash screen problem on XP after the new build I have just done. The 'options.ini' cure worked a treat for me but had the added bonus of changing the resolution to match my HD TV. I saw in the configation after the game booted for the first time all the paramaters were set and the rez was set at 800 x 600 on my 23'Samsung HD TV I can go up to 1360x768 and on most older games I can only go up to 1024x768 and get a 'stretched' picture as most games and including some today (Generals 3 being on of them) dont have widescreen resolutions. I changed the rez to 1360x768 and whoo hooo widescreen Generals!!!! Thanks to all for solving my problems. Great forum

Well I recently purchased C&C Generals and Zero Hour for my PC. I am running vista, and I set both Generals and Zero hour to compatibility mode, however, every so often the screen freezes for a few seconds with the music and whatever sound was playing constantly repeating the last 1/2 second. It does this for about 6 seconds, then the screen fragments (I don't know what it's called, that's the most fitting word I can think of), all sound stops, and I must reboot my PC. Before it only happened every 3 games or so, but now I can't even play 1 skirmish game without it happening. Any help please?

Hi, after getting my current PC (with vista) a few years ago i installed generals only to find it would hang at the 2nd splash, i gave up. I feel like playing it again and so followed all the instructions i've seen. I have patched generals and zero hour, put both in compatability mode for SP2 and run both as admin, i put the options.ini file into
EA games/command and conquer generals Zero hour
and
EA games/command and conquer generals zero hour/data
still the problem persists, i was wondering if anyone could help me.
Thanks in advance

This might have been said already but...
If you are running Vista Home Basic, DO NOT CLICK when Zero Hour is loading, that will make it glitch and cause an error. Just don't click anywhere on the screen while its loading.

I appreciate everyones wisdom and knowledge so far on this topic; however, I cannot get my game to run. I disabled UAC through msconfig.exe, I set up my options.ini, I put it the comptability in xp service pack 2, I clicked run as admin... I get two splash screens then the "technical difficulties" that hides behind the splash screen. I am running vista 64 ( pain in the boooty, Dell is shipping me 7... praying C&C works on there.)
Anyone have any ideas on what else I could try?
I have also tried patching from the autorun screen, and after I patch and it attempts to install my patch, I get the "Could not rename/delete file English.big, then the stupid git attempts to reinstall the patch in an endless loop.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Gracias. Thank you. Danka. Rar

I finally got my game to work using a little creativity. I play generals on my old laptop and it has worked great on their depsite the fact that the thing is a POS.Anyways, i attempted to get a good patch on my vista 64, the auto patch didnt work, neither did the patch from this site, installed myself. So i went to my old copy on my xp laptop, copied the english.big and replaced the one in my vista 64, and voila, it worked, and im online and everything is dandy. Thanks for everyones ideas and help.
if anyone wants me to send them a copy of the english.big file for them to replace themselves, feel free to pm me with ur email address and ill send it along for u
I have windows 7 and generals runs fine,
but when I try to download patch 1.8 (original generals) to play LAN with my brother it cannot overwrith English.big. Helpsies?

I have Vista, and I have First Decade with CNCGZH installed on it, and the latest Shockwave mod.
I start the normal Zero Hour, and it runs fine, but when I go to skirmish, the AI just sit there. It's just their command centers and single dozer sitting there. They are all white (as in neutral white)
I've tried reinstalling, and AI works fine with Shockwave. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
ALSO, TO FIX THE HANG ON 2ND SPLASH SCREEN PROBLEM ON VISTA:
Go to your /documents/generals zero hour blah blah blah/ directory
Delete everything. Create a new file called options.ini
Open it and paste the following:
AntiAliasing =
DrawScrollAnchor =
GameSpyIPAddress = 0.0.0.0
Gamma = 50
IPAddress = 0.0.0.0
IdealStaticGameLOD = High
LanguageFilter = false
MoveScrollAnchor =
MusicVolume = 55
Resolution = 800 600
Retaliation = yes
SFX3DVolume = 79
SFXVolume = 71
ScrollFactor = 50
SendDelay = no
StaticGameLOD = Low
UseAlternateMouse = no
UseDoubleClickAttackMove = no
VoiceVolume = 70
Save and exit,
Then send me a check for $500 and play the game.
($500 is optional of course)
OMG dude THANK YOU, I've been trying to get this to work on my PC after my vista update for a year now... Now I'm running this with Windows 7, it works just fine. Only the opening graphics in the main menu does not play, but what ever the game actually works now.
Hats off to ya

Everyone I know has told me 8 and 8.1 work fine. Just do a clean install, no compatibility and no options tricks.
It could be your hardware.

I've installed it on others' 8.1 computers too but if anyone's having the issue I'm getting I'd really appreciate knowing what they did to amend it, or if anyone has any suggestions.
Also when I try to patch to 1.04 it says "Old file not found".
