Hi i'm new to all of this and I was wondering if someone could help me with adding unofficial maps and mods.

Mods:
I downloaded a mod from some site and I placed the config. file in the C&C Generals Data Folder. I went in game to test it out, but it didn't work.

Unofficial Maps:
I did the same thing above and placed the downloaded map into the maps folder. When I went in game, it didn't appear.

Could someone explain to me what Im doing wrong? or what I might be missing? Thanks for all your help in advanced!

Are you using generals or zero hour?

I downloaded a mod from some site

Which mod, where did you download it from?

and I placed the config. file in the C&C Generals Data Folder.

What is the exact directory you placed it in?

Whilst it is possible to get a mod working from there, they usually go in the game folder, not in documents.

If it was made up of INI files, the standard directory is C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals\Data\INI

Usually, the maps go in the documents folder, but that depends on whether they were custom maps or a part of a mod. Hence why I asked which mod, because then I can be specific.

There shouldn't be a "Maps" folder inside the program side of the game. Remove it if you added it.
C:\Program Files\EA Games\Command and Conquer Generals

Do you have any unofficial maps shown when playing? You should see them if they're placed in the "My Documents" side of the game. My Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Data\Maps\

EDIT: Ah, good point on the MOD maps.

I'll download another map and I'll post the steps of what I did and you guys can correct me.

~Edit~
http://www.generalsmaps.net/
The file comes in a .zip file
Unzip it to the desktop
Open up the folder
There are two files: image file and .map file
I place the .map file into this directory:
C:\Users\Shadow\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Data\Maps
I place the image file into this directory:
C:\Users\Shadow\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Data\MapPreviews

Corrected version:

The file comes in a .zip file
Unzip it to the desktop
DO NOT open up the folder
You place the folder into this directory:
C:\Users\Shadow\Documents\Command and Conquer Generals Data\Maps
