For sure, whatever it was,the best option is to fight dirty when there's is no more choices.-That was my own philosophy.

What exactly are you looking for by the term "realistic"?

Work on sculpting your vision with the different brush tools.
It's all about elevations. Think about the water level (in feet) and work up from there... Or as I like to do, cut into a higher elevation that you set at the beginning and work your way down to the water level. Play with feathering setting on your brush tool to slope your sides. Remember that you can always re-cut areas you don't like. It will look rough at first until you smooth things out with the smooth height tool. You can really melt things away if you have the settings right. So set accordingly. Don't worry about painting tiles until you have the basic terrain the way you want or you'll find yourself re-painting as you change things around.

Think like a painter and paint undercoats first, then add similar (or contrasting) accents to mix things up. Say for example you make your cliffs with a brown color rock. Go back over areas with brown rock with grass or brown rock with snow at your peaks. It's your vision, paint away.

Plan areas for you urban settings but don't place buildings or trees until you have your terrain set and painted. That's like adding candles on a cake you so carefully decorated.
Have fun!

Realistic means it looks just like real ones. For example,if you making a map with mountain you might raised the ground carefully before coloring & blending the terrain and place trees and audio. That concept is usually are the main thing that most map maker considered first. It's also the same like making river, city and island.Even map that looks like a flat, plain maps(It's the simplest map, good for beginners)that was carefully made also looks like real flat lands.

And if you know how to make a map realistic then why are you here asking us that particular question?

Be aware that there's a limit to how high you can elevate your terrain and how low you can lower it. WorldBuilder only allows height within the 0 to 225 range. If you try to go beyond this range, the terrain will just flat out at them.

Also, when elevating or lowering terrain, the brush has three important options: The Brush Width, Brush Feather Width and Brush Height.
The Brush width determines how much terrain will be raised or lower AT ONE TIME. A high value held in place would result in a flat raised/lowered ground.
The Brush Feather Width determines the steepness of your mountains and valleys. A high value will result in a smooth slow while a low value results in impassable cliffs.
Another useful tool is the Smooth Height tool. This tool smooths out the terrain and cab ne used to make more smoothly rounded hills or less steep hills.
The Brush Height simply determines how fast you can raise or lower terrain. A high value would result in a rapid change in height, good for mountains and valleys, while a lower value would result in a slower change in height, good for when you're just trying to create uneven terrain in non-base building areas.

That should help you clear up your mountain and valley issues.

With oceans? When I played the map Sandy Beach downloaded from cncmaps.com,the beach have smooth waves, while mine, looks like no wave beach at all, does it need some scripting,or just open up Notepad and paste an ini.code?
