THIS is just me, but when i extract my own little files to Generals, they show up in the directory and mess up my navigation by having millions of little folders. I'll keep it my way, but i won't tell others to.
BONYCATFISH - if Krit will agree, my only problem with modding is the extracting part, which he can advise you about. IF you want to start modding, you will need to download the following basic utilities along with tutorials. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me, and CommieDog is probably the dominant .big editing master as of now, so feel free to ask him anything as well. And for a Mod or Admin, please make the following links a Sticky topic so others don't have to ask?
http://cncgeneralsworld.com/page.asp?page=tutorial:skinning3dmodelsingmaxwithrenx ---you will need to use the tutorial itself, as well as download the three useful links also shown on the page IN THIS ORDER - GMax, RenX, Chilliskinner
the link above and its three 'useful links' concern Modelling, the way you make and insert your own units into generals. to do that, as well as modify game files and mess around with numbers, you will need the following -
http://cncgeneralsworld.com/downloads/downloader.aspx?file=/downloads/modding/finalbig040b.zip as soon as you run that program, you can now open all of the game's .big files, the basic filetype for this game. the icons of the files of this type (once you download this) will appear as a torn piece of paper marked in red as 'Doc1'
BUT BONYFISH - please, save us all time and effort and edit a copied version of these files. editing the originals without knowing what you're doing (even knowing what you are doing) can result in fatal crashes of zero hour and are advised against.
I'm considering making a complete guide to modding (advise me if this has already been done) that will be open to revision by generalsworld members, like a Wiki of modding. I think this would be a good idea, and then we could make it a sticky topic and nobody would have to keep asking these questions.
here is exactly what the .big files will look like
