Google agreed Monday to pay $1.65 billion to acquire online video giant YouTube, a deal anticipated for several days. Now that the combination is official, the question is whether the deal guarantees full employment for every copyright infringement lawyer in the country.

The problem: A lot of the content on YouTube, according to some critics, is in violation of copyright laws. Google is clearly betting that it will be able to solve that issue, or at least make it affordable. The plan appears to be to turn YouTube's current adversaries into partners. And Wall Street apparently thinks the new partners will make it work. Google (GOOG, news, msgs) shares were up 2% in regular trading today and up slightly more in after-hours trading.

If Google is wrong, well, YouTube's current owners just got insanely rich because they held all the cards.

I blogged about this:
http://www.justanotherlist.com/pivot/entry.php?id=27

Given: Google recently bought Youtube.

Google will likely replace Google Video with Youtube.

Google recently created Google Checkout, a paypal like money service.

Google is the #1 aggregator of user information and tracking on the planet.

The Equation:

(Google Video x 0) + Google Youtube + Google ads/suggestions based on aggregate data + Google Checkout + Deals with TV giants = Google Youtube Micropayment and Suggestion System

The Conclusion:

Google will offer suggested videos at the end of videos and on the youtube sidebar. Among these suggestions will be pay to play video from major TV networks. Since you can log in using your gmail account which is already linked to google checkout, you'll be able to pay and play instantly.

Remaining issues:

No one knows better than Microsoft that just because you integrate an email address and multiple services, you're not always going to achieve success. Passport was a failure. Can google overcome the passport-syndrome and tame the masses of 12 year old youtube viewers and cover for the bandwidth losses?

I just hope they won't change the logo to "Google YouTube" or anything of the sort.

How was the .net passport a failure?

.net passport was disjointed and confusing for users. Microsoft admitted a couple years ago that it was one of their worst ideas. It was a way for them to quickly integrate things they've taken over without any form of realistic creativity.
