I tried giving a helicopter a dragon tank weapon, but the fire made weird zig zag patterns and didn't actually reach the ground. Is this even possible?

The flame thrower is a rapid stream of invisible missiles with napalm exhausts. It's the missile AI that's causing the problem. You'd have to experiment with the flame thrower projectile. Turning it into a shell might help.
