Here is an unusual question (at least I think it is, as I can't find anything about this anywhere).

I want create a mod that departs from the RTS style, and instead you will control a single Comanche around the map. Anyone who has played the Strike series sees where this is going.

So to get this thing going, I'll need a way to control the comanche with the keyboard, and to have the camera follow the comanche as it moves around. whether this is simple scripting or nigh impossible, I don't have the experience to know, but hopefully someone here does.

There's no way to do this in Generals that i know of, its just not designed for it at all. Games that have FPS and RTS stuffs together are almost unheard of, and i have no idea why.

I can invision it being possible but by no means is it going to be a very stable result in Zero Hour. ZH simply is not designed for that kind of thing.

You can script the camera to lock itself to an object and follow it around, but the player can ALWAYS reset it back to the RTS view by clicking the mouse wheel.

If you set Letterbox mode to be enabled you can get rid of the HUD but the buttons might still be clickable, I don't know.

Also, unless you're fine with the Comanche not being able to attack air, you should either give it a new weapon or modify the existing one.

No matter how you do this though, it won't be very fun to actually play in Zero Hour. It simply isn't designed for that. You're much better off modifying Half-Life 2 or Renegade or something.
Any old friends still on here can add me on discord @jcdenton2187. I'm far more likely to respond there.

You would still command it to move and stuff with the mouse though, wouldn't be able to actually fly it or aim.

Well, It was worth a shot. I thought about using Unity at first, but putting in resources from Generals is apparently no easy task. With the SAGE-engine deriving from Renegade, I hoped it would be something in the coding to use, while having all the models, data and the Worldbuilder ready.

Anyways, thanks for the answers. I'll see if there is another way to do this.

And for anyone wondering about FPS/RTS: Battlezone (1998)

You should probably mod Renegade, which already has a system for controlling vehicles like you mean.
I've never done the multiplayer but I do believe a few maps let you use air units, like the Orca and NOD Apache.

And I don't know if I'm right at all here, but it might be easier to import the models from ZH to Renegade if they're running on the same engine.

Glad to be of limited service, however. Good luck on your goals. 😄 👍
