Not sure if there are a lot of people here using linux, but I guess it can't hurt to post this.
For the sake of simplicity everything I tell is for Ubuntu, other distro's might have their own ways to do it.
First of all, the wine version that comes in the ubuntu packages is old (1.01).
With this old version of wine, everything seems to run fine during startup of generals, until you get to the menu and discover, there is no mouse cursor (ever tried playing an RTS without a visible mouse?)
In order to fix this, you have to get the latest version of wine (1.14 at this moment) from the wine repositories.
Go to "system->administration->software sources" go to the "third-party software" and add one of the following repository
For Ubuntu Intrepid (8.10):
deb
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt intrepid main #WineHQ - Ubuntu 8.10 "Intrepid Ibex"
For Ubuntu Hardy (8.04):
deb
http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt hardy main #WineHQ - Ubuntu 8.04 "Hardy Heron"
Next download the publick key
here and save it somewhere.
Open the "Authentication" tab and add the key file.
Next reload the repositories and install/update wine.
On the latest version of wine, runs Generals + Zero hour fine except some minor graphical glitches:
-The cursors are not perfect yet, they are freezed at the first frame of the animated cursor.
-Texture alpha blending does not work probably so sometimes the textures look a bit ugly.
Other than this all works fine as far as I know.
