Planet CNC Updates and Interview

First, over at PlanetCNC they have a special newspost asking for your comments about the first Command and Conquer, Tiberian Dawn. In addition, they have a very good interview with Frank Klepacki. Here's a snip:
HeXetic: Do you have any interesting stories about "intra-Westwood" C&C matches?
Frank: Yeah, we'd put all of us on speaker phone in the office as we played against each other (this concept is now called teamspeak - hehe) and we would love every minute of sneaking behind someones base and hearing them go "Damnit!" on the speaker phone. It was hilarious. Then when one of us would get too good, the rest would team up against him and take him out first, then turn on each other afterward. Was a lot of fun.
Full thing here.

They also have a review of the recently released mod, MidEast Crisis, which you can read here.

CNC 10

Tomorrow marks the 10th anniversary of the great series of Command and Conquer. For many of us here at Generals World, a Command and Conquer has become our favorite game, and, in some sense, a great passion. All this week, and in the weeks to follow, we and the other community sites will be celebrating the 10th anniversary. There are a number of events going on, and I encourage you to participate.

There is also furious speculation that EA will be announcing something this week. While I think it is possible, I sadly, don't expect it. The game will come when the game will come, and until then, all we have are the classic Command and Conquer games--from Dawn and onward--created by the great Westwood studios.

All in all, not bad things to be left with while you wait. Happy Birthday C&C!

Flak's Steak House IV

Flak, over at CNC Depot has done the fourth version of his 'Steak House', where he 'grills' different webmasters in the community. This time he's gotten Cannis onto the fire. Here's a snip:
lak: How did so many of the community's more talented and creative people come to be a part of the network?
Cannis: Well, like I said, several members are from RA2MG, who were hand-picked by Z_Outlaw when he founded that site. Since then I have either specifically invited individual members, or individuals have come to me to request membership. Everybody's reasons and circumstances were different, and you'd have to ask them as to how and why they came on board. For instance, in your interview with Mooman65, he described his circumstances pretty well.

My philosophy has been to try to assemble mature individuals, who are of course talented and creative, rather than to offer hosting widely, just to pack the network with deadwood websites. My emphasis has been to include members who understand that a game editing network serves a gaming community, as opposed to the generally-accepted view that the C&C community is about forum spamming and websites posting the same news as everyone else.
See the rest here.

Maps, Maps, and a Mission at the DEN

As usual, CNC DEN is trying to undermine my news credibility by simply posting up more maps and missions faster than I can post news that they have them. However, this time, it is not to be: They have one new mission, V2 of City Under Siege, 1 map pack (containing 4 maps) 2 regular maps, and 1 Featured Map. All are available here.

Mark Skaggs Posts at CNCDEN

Over at CNC DEN Mark Skaggs, former EA exec, has posted in this thread to respond and clarify some details about his history, namely his work with Westwood and whether or not he was fired from EA. Below is his post:
No, I wasn't fired. I decided to take a break so I could spend time with my family. During my break, I went to E3 just to catch up with friends only to walk out with 6 job offers. Shortly thereafter I resigned from EA. Technically, I did work at Westwood. After EA purchased Westwood, they merged the ex-Virgin studio in Irvine into Westwood and called it "Westwood Pacific". Each week or so I travelled to Las Vegas for a day or two to participate as part of the exec staff. During that time, I was fortunate to learn a tremendous amount from Brett, Louis and the rest of the folks there about making games.
I'm working on assuring that it really is Mark, but the admins of the forums are adament that it is. No mention from him about RA3.

MidEast Crisis Release Today

ISOTX, one of the newer mod studios, has passed along the following annoucement concerning the mod featuring a fictional war between Israel and Syria, as well as their mod utility Mod Toaster that allows for switching between multiples mods:
Mandarax (ISOTX): The hour approaches. MidEast Crisis is complete, and ModToaster is ready to roll. Only time and a fried internet system in Switzerland stand between these first two ISOTX productions and public release. People, it’s time to hold your breath. I’ve had the great honor of working on and testing both of these projects and all I can say is that I’m extremely impressed by the professionalism and quality apparent throughout the projects. You all are in for some real treats. Come Hell or high water, these WILL release within hours, whether Ome Vince can be online to make the post or not. Keep checking the site! It’ll come any time now!
While you wait for the mod release, they have 14 screenshots of helicopters in action here. Update: It's been released. Get it at their website.

New RA2 Co-op over at RADEN

Red Alert DEN has a new Co-op mission for Red Alert 2, the first fan made one. It's done by the famous RVMECH and takes place in the hills of Appalachia over the course of a few days. Weighing it at only 11MB, I recommend all RA2 players give it a shot. Installer included. Note that both players must have the mission installed, as it will not transfer at game startup.

Community News

  • Results from the third Open Map Competition are currently being posted on CNC Community, though only the TS maps have been judged. After all the winners in that catergory have been announced, I will post them here at Generals World.
  • The Cold War Crisisteam has posted some nice pictures from their trip to Germany for the Games Convention. They have one of Community Manager Aaron "Apoc" Kaufman playing the mod.
  • Red Alert: Road to Moscow has three nice renders, one of the Weather Storm generator, one of the Flak Track, and one of the Soviet Spy Plane.
  • There is a nice teaser video CNC Reborn. In their own words:
After a long and hard process, we finished all of the weapons. Nightcrawler worked very hard in getting all of them ingame and working properly. He was helped by laeubi and thekgbspy for the technical aspect. Nightcrawler made new custom animations and created projectile and all sort of nice effects for most of the weapons. There are many new sounds and also some from renegade. Thanks to Fobby, Jokah and Pendullum for the new sounds. Some sounds, weapon positions and animations may be changed. Let's not wait anymore, get the trailer (about 36 mb) that Sloth made today and enjoy it!
  • Halogen is showing the concept art behind their Cobra Tank.
  • CNCDEN has eight new ZH replays.

New Poll and Poll Results

I updated the poll today (a day ahead of schedule for those scoring at home). The results of the last one are below. I must say, I'm not at all surprised at how few of you knew what the CNC10 celebrations were and planned on celebrating. In my opinion, I don't think the community delivered on the early hype that soon fizzled. In any event, we at Generals World are working on cooking up something special for the celebration, and we think and hope it will be a feature you will enjoy quite a bit when the time comes. Until then, though, those who know of it mouths are sealed.

Possible Cancelled CNC Game(s)

Lion, of CNC Den is reporting that
"I received some info from someone who wishes to remain anonymous. This may be old news as well. But I don't recall ever seeing anything posted about it in past years. I'm labeling this as a rumor since I was unable to confirm the info...but the source is fairly reliable.

"Back a year or so before Westwood Studios was closed by EA, there were several projects in the works that never made it out the door. One was a First Person Shooter/RTS Hybrid titled "Battlefields". The other was an MMOG with a working title of "Continuum" that may have taken place in the Tiberian universe. Just rumors..."
He also has a picture that could have been from 'Continuum' up. That picture is below:
