I agree. Makeing posts to a forum is good to document things but a chat bar allows more socialization and could lead to alot less of the same post over and over. But draw back is it could be flooded with dumb things.

Good concept, as many other forums utilize that. However, I was going to say something along the same lines like Acid Brain.

This will be harder to implement than it seems though, as I have attempted many times to implement CnC Labs hosting for maps on the classic Command and Conquer games (using the editor known has Final Sun). But, it hasn't gone everywhere yet, as BlbPaws, Micsotho (who's the webmaster), and CommieDog have been quite busy lately ;)

The forum software definitely is too old for this idea, but I'm not sure it would be a good thing even if it could support it. One of the reasons forums are so valuable is that the archive posts so well. For example, we now have almost 15 years of posts about modding various C&C games--that's a lot of questions asked and answered, and a great resource. In a time when the community is so much slower than a decade ago (because EA stopped making games and most sites closed), that resource is very valuable.

In the past, people have created Off Topic threads for more informal discussions. I think that's the best idea, just be respectful to one another.
